Fishing Vessels Much of the commercial success of Berwick Shipyard was derived from building fishing vessels. Here, fishing writer and researcher Graham Toward takes a detailed look at the yard’s output over the years. The first fishing vessel to be built at Berwick Shipyard under the Fairmile ownership was completed in , and was the first of a new design class named the Fair Isle trawlers.

This class was designed to replace older, larger vessels, and had much more economic running costs, and also required a smaller crew, therefore making them popular with owners. For the next few years, the yard was kept fully occupied with these boats, turning them out at a rate of about five a year. Most of these boats were destined for Aberdeen owners, although some worked from Granton, and two were built for England. In total twenty two of them were built.

This was a government financed scheme to encourage the replacement of an ageing fleet with new vessels. Through the scheme, low cost loans were available, and also there was the possibility of a grant towards the cost of the new vessel. The scheme was re-introduced the following year, but with modifications which meant that the Fair Isle class of boat no longer qualified for assistance.

Contact Us Industrial Period – Industry is a term that describes a wide range of economic activities based on the sourcing, manipulation and movement of raw materials for commercial gain. In the modern era the term is used widely to describe activities as diverse as banking, computer software engineering and forestry, but in the period of industrial development between about and it is usually associated with the transformation of natural raw materials into useful products using water-power or coal as the primary source of energy.

During the course of the 19th century, coal replaced water as the main power source of industrial Britain. The Great Northern Coalfield had long been the biggest producer of coal in the country, and a variety of other industries became established on the banks of the Tyne and Wear by taking advantage of the abundant supply of cheap fuel. However, despite the apparent advantages of the region in terms of its coal supplies and access to waterways, its industrial development was not rapid, and until well into the 19th century it lagged behind other parts of Britain, such as West Yorkshire, Merseyside and Clydeside in the crucial fields of iron production and engineering.

Shipbuilding, too, was also held back by the terrible state of the rivers and by the continuation of the wooden shipbuilding tradition.

Taylor edited by John Clayson This series of photographs was taken by John in the summer of while walking the northern section of the former High Dyke branch line, a distance of 3 miles. The branch was a mineral line which transported locally mined ironstone to a junction at Highdyke on the East Coast Main Line, just north of Stoke Tunnel. However, the connections for the branch had been installed at Highdyke by November , so the branch may well have been in partial use well before its official opening.

There had been a junction at Highdyke since when a third running line from Grantham, the Up Goods, was extended as far as the approach to the two-track Stoke Tunnel. The branch had originally been promoted in about as the Waltham and Highdyke Railway, because it was intended to connect Highdyke with Waltham-on-the-Wolds, a terminus on the GNR’s branch line from Scalford, Leicestershire.

The High Dyke branch was built relatively cheaply across undulating countryside and it was quite steeply graded in parts, being known to generations of Grantham train crew as ‘the alps’.

The River past Newcastle is no longer maintained by dredging, but wouldn’t practically cause much of a problem, so an intrepid motorboat owner could push his way as far as Wylam. First a few images. Hover your mouse over each thumbnail to read the subject matter. The operational dates above are surely not perfect. A ‘best effort’ at a sequence, if you will. If you can refine the information, do be in touch. Information on the history of ‘Blumer’ of Sunderland seems to be quite limited. But much of the data that follows is thanks to the efforts of Ray Ranns, who lives near Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire, U.

Ray has been most busy assembling data about the family history, building upon materials assembled by his father ‘Noel Blumer Ranns’. Of which John Blumer was one. But you should also know that the Blumer family was involved in shipbuilding in nearby Hartlepool. While the business was mainly in the repair of ships they did keep their workforce busy with new construction when the repair business was quiet. And they built 10 vessels during the short lifetime of the firm.

Phil’s quite obvious enthusiasm for Blyth is infectious – his love of the Northumbrian town shines through, and so I am pleased he has agreed to input his childhood memories on this site. Meanwhile I’ll let Phil take up the story The map itself is quite fragile and it is printed on what I can only describe as greaseproof paper. The map is not on the usual alignment since the North is off to the left in the top left corner of the map.

By the time of this view, the vehicle had been relegated to training duties. The view is of particular interest in that both fleet names appear, in Tilling style, on the side. A typical NBC waste of money. Everyone I knew always said they were travelling on “the Wilts”. Goodness knows what this is supposed to mean. It sounds like they were an afterthought! Whatever is wrong with good old-fashioned no-nonsense titles, that did what it said on the tin?

Living in Ottershaw, I am often in and around Chobham but have not seen them in service there yet. Working regularly around Croydon, I have seen quite a lot of them — and in the intervening territory. I also live in Ottershaw 26 years now so we may have crossed paths at some point. There also appears to be a Coaches Excetera arm as well, the website not only giving a London Phone contact number, but also a Milan one! I believe the coaches arm came first but I also suspect that it was a pre-existing company known by another name.

Grahame asks why things cannot now do what they say on the tin. Sadly, and increasingly, they often do — the tin has very little in it.

History of Ilfracombe Ilfracombe has been settled since the Iron Age , when the Dumnonii the Roman name for the inhabitants of the South-West established a hill fort on the dominant hill, Hillsborough formerly Hele’s Barrow. The origin of the town’s name has two possible sources. The first is that it is a derivative of the Anglo-Saxon Alfreinscoma – by which name it was noted in the Liber Exoniensis of The second origin is that the name Ilfracombe was derived from Norse illf bad , Anglo-Saxon yfel evil ford and Anglo-Saxon cumb valley perhaps from a Celtic source compare Welsh cwm , thus ‘The valley with the bad ford’.

It is also said to be haunted. It is recorded that the lands by the church were part of the estate owned by Champernowne family , while those by the harbour belonged to the Bouchier family: Nicholas’s Chapel on Lantern Hill Because of the natural layout of the harbour, Ilfracombe became a significant safe port registered port of refuge on the Bristol Channel.

It also had trade routes between Kinsale and Tenby , which made the port stronger.

Due to summer holidays there is no branch meeting this month. However it is interesting to report we held our Annual Branch day out when we hired a coach to visit Lake Windermere. Also some members chose to take the train to Haverthwaite. Although it rained for most of the day we all enjoyed the day out very much.

Emergency services at Cullercoats Bay after a woman was pulled from the water Image: Two swimmers from a group and a woman on her own were saved on Sunday morning by the emergency services after getting into difficulty. Crews were preparing for a training day when a dog walker told them there was a woman in difficulty off Cullercoats Bay.

As the lifeboat was about to launch, the dog walker found the woman and pulled her from the water with the help of a crew member. The crew carried her to the lifeboat station, where they gave her first aid. An ambulance was called to the scene and the Great North Air Ambulance landed at around 9am.
